Winery Tour and Tasting in a Historic Montepulciano Cellar

La visita a la bodega és molt curta, esperava més explicació. El nostre guia, en Luigi ens va encantar, tot i ser catalans i ell fer la visita en italià, ho vam entendre tot. El menjar i tots els vins estan molt bons, tot i que vam trobar que les ampolles eren bastant cares comparat amb Espanya, n'haguessim comprat alguna si no fos per les restriccions de l'avió. Ho recomanem.

It’s a truly unique wine tasting experience, as you’ll be exploring historical Etruscan caves, approximately 7-8 floors underground. You’ll have the opportunity to witness the distinct layers where seashells once lay. Interestingly, it’s believed that the landmass shifted from the seabed to land around 5-6 million years ago, eventually becoming Montepulciano. The complex and refined flavors of Montepulciano wines are a result of the unique composition of the soil and stones in this region. The wines introduced were simply beautiful. I like the Nobile di Montepulciano better than others. The only challenge is the strenuous walk to the entrance. But don’t worry, there’s a separate exit after the wine tasting that will take you back to Main Street.

This is clearly a business that is ran by passionate people. I was lucky enough to get a private tour with Fiore since I came during off-season. She is incredibly warm and you can tell how passionate she is for wine, history, and the region. The cellar is special- being used for thousands of years by different groups of people in the area. The tunnels dug into the sandstone expose the geological history of Italy dating back to the Mesozoic Era. You can see plenty of intact fossils and sea shells. The way they display their bottles is lovely, and the underground tasting rooms were also beautifully done. I am still only a few years into learning about wine, but have a passion for it. I had plenty of questions. Fiore was excited to answer my questions and hear my thoughts on the wines. She was very knowledgeable, and even though she was my tour guide- by the end it felt like we were friends. The space is beautiful, but she made it truly special. A wonderful, memorable experience! La visita all'interno della cantina e la degustazione di vini tipici sono state molto suggestive. Purtroppo a causa di una grande affluenza di gente, siamo arrivate in ritardo e abbiamo saltato la parte iniziale relativa alla spiegazione all'interno della cantina. Nonostante ciò la nostra guida Luigi ci ha messo a nostro agio facendoci partecipare all'interessante degustazione e lasciandoci del tempo extra al termine per farci esplorare la cantina. Super consigliata!

The best part for me was walking from inside the shop, down, down,!down the steep staircase, through an old tunnel where you needed to bend slightly to pass through into the cavern where the massive, old wooden wine barrels were. Listening to the young man tell of the history of this place was also incredible. It used to be a prison and a shelter during world war two, some people lived there during this time in history, there was also a church.
