Lucca to Pisa Self-Guided Bike Tour: Nature Scenery & Leaning Tower

Fietsroute via de komoot app. De gsm houder van 1 fiets was niet zo stevig. De heenweg was zeer mooi. Maar op sommige wegen was er wel druk verkeer. Daar hebben we onze elektrische fietsen op turbo gezet om er vlug voorbij te zijn. De terugweg was anders en 7 km korter. Fietsen waren in orde echter het zadel kon beter voor een tocht van totaal 60 km. Aanrader.

This is a great bike tour for those who are comfortable biking 20+ miles on scenic bike paths as well as busy streets. The staff are very helpful in downloading the app. It can be confusing, however, and we did have to backtrack a couple of times to make sure we were still going in the right direction. Let’s just say be prepared to have an adventure as you use the app and you will have much more enjoyable experience. We did not rush so it took us a couple of hours to do the trip. It is a great way to see more of the countryside and if you like biking this is a great experience.

Beautiful route, very well organised and great bikes. We were a group of 6 people, 2 with e-bikes - the route was flat and largely along quiet off road routes with short distances on tarred and slightly busy roads. Lovely stop half way. It was easy to secure the bikes while wandering around Pisa. Make sure you take note of where the station is before you leave if you are taking the train back. It is quite easy to load your bike and the trip back is quick. Fabulous day out despite the extreme heat!

We had wanted to book e-bikes, but since they were all booked we went with trekking bikes. That turned out to be to our benefit because an e-bike is not really necessary if you are used to bike riding. Since it was a very hot day (32C), we opted not to ride all the way to Pisa and turned around about half way through. The ride that far was very nice - mostly gravel and quite bumpy, but scenic and fun. The bikes were good quality and the service at the bike shop was very helpful - offering some suggestions for places to stop for a break (we stopped in Ripafratta). The App was easy to follow. Upon returning to Lucca we rode around the Wall, which was also quite nice. One thing of note is that the online info leads you to believe you can drop your bikes off at a “sister” store in Pisa and then take the train back without the bike. What is not mentioned is that there is quite a charge for this (ie prices equivalent to a taxi to have the bike returned by van).

Friendly helpful staff, it was raining heavily on the day booked and they kindly allowed us to postpone the trip till the following day when better weather was expected. The e-bikes were excellent, although the route was mainly flat with the only rises of any significance due to overpassess and underpasses. Nonetheless the e-bikes made it very easy cycling. The only downside was that they are heavy and do not fit in the station lifts so if you want to catch the train home, be prepared to do some heavy lifting at the stations. Very little if any traffic for most of the route, mostly on approaches to town. Aqueduct into Pisa was a highlight.

We wondered if the ride would be difficult as we had been walking over 20,000 steps a day. The e-bikes were excellent and well maintained. We had lessons and got a helmet and were off on the adventure. The app worked great and the bike store helped me download it offline. We had excellent weather. The path was easy to follow, There were a few moments on busy roads but very little and the cars respected us. The bike store has a friend bike store at the train station in Pisa. It is however not a ten minute walk from the station to the tower, etc. Take a cab would be my recommendation it is at least a 30 min walk if not more. But having the peace of mind to not worry about the bikes was nice. We returned by train with the bikes These are big bikes m. They do not fit in a station elevator You will need to carry your bike down from the train in Lucca. But then there is a ramp to come out of the station. So I did manage to get the bike down by myself but it was not easy.

Geweldige fietstocht. Op stenenpadden tot aan velden. Telefoon gaat wel snel leeg als je vergeet dat de app ook werkt zonder 4g na opstart. Vergeet zeker niet een powerbank mee te nemen. Fiets fietste top. Slot en kit met hulpmiddelen mee geeft veilig gevoel al kreeg ik niet het idee dat er mensen op uit waren. Contact was snel en geruststellend over eventuele slechte weer wat uiteindelijk een zonnig weer werd. Onderweg kom je al snel wat andere fietsers tegen wat wel handig was voor bevestiging van de richting.
