Spending just over a week in Rome could be overwhelming, with heat and tourists at many of the most popular sites. So we chose to get away to Castel Gandolfo, just a short train ride away but a world away in its serenity and natural beauty. We took the train from Termini which was very simple and after climbing a bit of a steep hill from the Gandolfo train station sat at a cafe and took in the charming square before beginning our tour. My favorite aspect was the gardens, which are simply lovely. The Papal apartments were very interesting too. Afterwards a short walk away we had a lovely lunch I overlooking the lake. It was a great day overall and a perfect respite from the crowds of Rome. We loved it!
