From Rome: Pompeii & Amalfi Coast Day Trip

Fantastic day trip from Rome to Pompeii and Sorrento, accepting there is necessarily a lot of travel time involved. Our tour guide for the day Cosimo was perfect, he was knowledgeable and very considerate of everyone in the group, always making the effort to explain how each part of the day would run and offering tips to make it enjoyable and comfortable throughout. Our guide for the ruins at Pompeii Francesca was excellent, she has a wealth of expertise and was also a great story teller. Also our bus driver was fantastic, safely driving us for over 6 hours with no issues.

Fabio the guide was awesome. He was punctual and kept the group on task especially in Sorrento as people had free time to check out the area. Be advised if you want to swim in Sorrento you will have to make bookings before you’re tour date as day of its too late. The parking area in Sorrento isn’t close to the beach and there’s not enough time to walk to the beach, try and get a spot, and come back. That being said Sorrento was great. Check out the Foreigner’s club restaurant, it had amazing views of the harbour and towards Naples and Mt. Vesuvius. Pompeii was eye opening. The city is way bigger than I thought and the clay figures of the victims are sobering thoughts. Some of the places were preserved pretty well. Long day but overall very informative and good for a first timer.

Pompeii was incredible. I couldn’t believe how big it was and how much is there. Sorento was nice and I had the best pizza of my life thanks to our guide recommendation to be sure to have pizza margherita. This is a very long day. Bring a sweatshirt to stay warm on the bus and be prepared to sleep some on bus as it’s about 3 hours each way.

Cossimo was our guide from Rome, Katerina in Pompeii. Both were excellent. Cossimo gave us lots of information on the way and way back, he was genuinely concerned with making sure that everyone in the party was well looked after. Katerina in Pompeii was wonderful too. So full of knowledge and wanted us to see as much as possible. It would have been nice to have more time in Pompeii (2.5 hours) and Sorrento (2 hours) but Pompeii is extremely hot and with so little shelter from the sun, 2.5 hours is probably as much as you can take. Sorrento was however more of a rush but with travel time back you do t get back to Rome until 8pm so there is probably not a lot more time available. The description said travel straight to Pompeii but we did stop at a services near Cassino where you can get coffee/drinks Minibus was warm on the way back, but it was nearly 40 so it struggled to keep a full load cool. Minor inconvenience when all considered. The guides made it, they were so good.
