Venice Carnival Mask Painting Workshop

Our mascareri was experienced, kind and very knowledgeable. she told us about the history of Venetian masks and encouraged us to find our style for our masks as we painted, giving us advice on how to improve our technique / achieve what we wanted to. The activity was very enjoyable, and my husband and I are leaving with our own gorgeous souvenirs that speak about us. We highly recommend this activity to those that want to learn a bit more about Venetian culture and enjoy a bit of arts and crafts at the same time!

My daughter and I loved the masks we painted! I especially appreciated that the workshop leader let my teenage daughter do the fancy metallic decoration herself. Normally he does that bit himself and you could tell he was a little uncertain when she asked to do it herself, but he did let her. She did a great job. She is an artist and was willing to accept the risk that if she messed up he couldn’t fix it for her.

I felt very disappointed with this experience as I had been really looking forward to it. When I arrived, I was asked to choose a mask and then the instructor drew a design onto it for me. I was disappointed that I didn’t get to do this part myself, as I thought this would be part of the mask-making experience. I then chose three colours and painted two layers of each colour onto the mask. I use these types of paints at home myself, so I knew they were fairly cheap materials. Once I had finished painting, the instructor added the gold detailing himself and that was it. I felt it was very expensive for what was essentially just painting two layers of paint onto a mask. I expected to be much more involved in actually designing and decorating it, especially for the price. The instructor was also on his phone quite a lot throughout the experience. Fun class to do! Our teacher was lovely and gave some good examples. Nice little history lesson in the beginning, too. Would have been nice to have a little extra painting time, but I am a bit too meticulous so that’s on me. Plenty of inspiration around Venice for painting your mask prior, too. It’s a nice cool spot and a good selection of acrylic paints. :)

Una decepción, contraté la actividad en castellano a través de esta plataforma a pesar de ser más cara que otras plataformas por este motivo y la chica del taller no hablaba castellano. Los materiales para la actividad muy escasos, eché en falta abalorios, brillantinas o plumas para añadir a la decoración de la máscara. Ofertaban gran variedad de modelos de máscaras para decorar en la descripción de la actividad y una vez allí solo te daban 3 opciones… no vale el dinero que pagas por la actividad.
