The Palatine hill was chosen by Romulus as it was deemed to be the best of all the 7 hills in Rome, thanks to its central position that was simply ideal. The ancient civilizations tended to choose the high grounds close to rivers for their early settlements. This gave a strategic advantage in case of military attacks as well as against the frequent floods of the water streams.
