   At the Abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate, Bene FAI, you will be accompanied to discover one of the most important medieval monastic complexes in Salento. Founded in the twelfth century, the abbey tells the role of monasteries as places of spirituality, culture and organization of the territory. During the visit you will admire the extraordinary frescoes of the Byzantine tradition, explore the monastic environments and learn about the daily life of the religious community. The route continues in the historic Masseria di Cerrate, where you will discover the ancient agricultural activities visiting the underground oil mill and the cereal mill, testimony of the important economic role played by the abbey over the centuries.
