   Porta San Sebastiano

   Pass by

   You leave the city through the largest and best preserved gate in the Aurelian Walls — the point where the Appian Way begins.

   Church of Domine Quo Vadis

   10min

   A short stop at the small church where, according to tradition, Peter met Christ on his way out of Rome. Free to enter, and the footprints in the marble are worth the five minutes.

   Appian Way (Via Appia Antica)

   You drive the original Roman road yourself, on basalt stones laid more than two thousand years ago. Your printed road book tells you where to pull over, what you are looking at and which stretches photograph best. Self-guided: no guide, no group, the car is yours.

   Circus of Maxentius

   Pass by

   You pass the best preserved Roman circus outside the city walls, clearly visible from the road.

   Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella e Castrum Caetani - Parco Archeologico dell'Appia Antica

   20min

   The most photographed monument on the Appian Way, a cylindrical mausoleum from the first century BC. You stop outside for photographs; entry to the archaeological area is not included and can be bought on site.

   Stop 6

   40min

   The last stop: a wide open park where ancient aqueducts run across the fields to the horizon, with nothing modern in the frame. Free to enter, and the late afternoon light is the reason we finish here.
