   Castel Gandolfo

   30min

   The Pope's summer town, on the rim of a volcanic crater. You leave the car on the belvedere and the whole of Lake Albano opens up below you.

   Frascati

   45min

   A wine town in the hills, with a piazza made for sitting in and the Villa Aldobrandini above it. You reach it by climbing through the vineyards with the roof open.

   Grottaferrata

   30min

   A Greek abbey founded in 1004 inside a papal fortress, still lived in by monks who celebrate in Greek twenty minutes from Frascati.

   Nemi

   30min

   The smaller of the two crater lakes, known for its wild strawberries and for the Roman ships once sunk in it. The village above looks straight down onto the water.

5. 5

   Monte Tuscolo

   45min

   The last climb, a quarter of an hour through chestnut woods to a Roman theatre on the ridge. From up here you see the whole plain and the dome of St Peter's.
