   Ride the funicular up to the upper town and meet your local guide. Walk along the Venetian walls (UNESCO World Heritage), through Piazza Vecchia, past the Colleoni Chapel and into the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, then stop for an espresso or a slice of Bergamo's polenta e osei cake.

   Drive through the foothills to Sulzano on the eastern shore of Lake Iseo, with views of the lake and Monte Isola rising from the water.

   Board the ferry across to Peschiera Maraglio on Monte Isola. Stroll the lakefront of this car-free island, see boatbuilders' workshops and fishing nets, and have lunch at a lakeside trattoria. Try the island's dried sardines (sardine di Monte Isola) or lake fish with polenta

   Return to the mainland and drive into the rolling vineyards of Franciacorta. Visit one of Franciacorta's best-known estates in Erbusco. See the cellars where the wine ages on its lees, learn how traditional-method sparkling wine is made, and taste a selection of Franciacorta with local bites.
