Civitavecchia Port: Tarquinia Etruscan City & Ancient Site Tour

The tour was perfect! It was tailored to our small group and the guide was a resident of the area so was very knowledgeable and knew everything about what we experienced! She was flexible and kind and very generous with her time and just wanted to make sure our time was interesting and well spent. The tombs are self-guided using audio guides which, given the small spaces and the spread-out nature of the site, was the perfect way of seeing it! The rest of the tour she led and I can’t say enough good things!

Erna our guide was really lovely and informative. It was just myself and my daughter booked on the tour so we had a lovely time being shown around by her. The tombs were really interesting and amazingly well preserved. Until I saw this trip advertised I had no idea they existed but the colours on the walls are really bright considering they are 2000 years old! She showed us all around Tarquinia and introduced us to many of the locals and made us feel very welcome. It was also really interesting to see the artisan workshops where the pottery and sculptures are made just as they were in the past and the visit to the museum at the end helped complete our vision of what the tombs would have looked like when they were discovered. The town itself is very historic and the town hall has some beautiful frescos which are very old. If you have already been to Rome or would like to see something a bit different and off the beaten track then I would thoroughly recommend this tour.

If you’re bored with visiting Rome from Civitavecchia then this is the tour for you. A short drive from the port, the Etruscan tombs are magnificent. We had plenty of time to visit most of them - this is done on our own as it would be impossible to have a guided tour due to the size of each tomb but it works well. We then had a 10 min walk into the ancient town of Tarquinia which had lots to offer. The museum was particularly good as it houses the actual sarcophagi from the tombs. The tour was sold as 5 hours but actually took 7 and there was a lot of hanging around at times which was frustrating.
