   Villa d'Este

   Villa d'Este in Tivoli (Rome) is one of the greatest masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was wanted by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, disappointed by the failure to be elected pope, who in 1550 became governor of Tivoli. Designed by the architect and archaeologist Pirro Ligorio (with the realization of Alberto Galvani) transforming an ex Benedictine convent. The Palace presents sober interiors on the outside but richly decorated on the inside with late-Mannerist frescoes by artists such as Federico Zuccari and Girolamo Muziano. The Gardens and the Water The real focus is the monumental terraced garden, famous for the extraordinary hydraulic engineering that uses gravity to power hundreds of fountains, nymphaea, and grottoes. • The Iconic Fountains: Among the most famous works are the Ovato Fountain, the Dragon Fountain, the Viale delle Cento Fontane, the Neptune Fountain, and the famous Organ Fountain, which produces sounds by utilizing the flow of water.

   Villa Adriana

   Villa Adriana, located in Tivoli, is the largest and most extraordinary suburban residence ever built by a Roman emperor. It was built by Emperor Hadrian between 118 and 138 AD.C.. It was developed on a huge area of about 120 hectares. Emperor Hadrian wanted to reproduce the monuments and works of art that had most impressed him during his trips throughout the Empire. • Main buildings: • The Pecìle: a large covered garden surrounded by a pool. • The Maritime Theater: a small circular island with an Ionic portico, the emperor's private refuge. • The Canopus: a long valley adorned with a water channel, statues (including caryatids) and a temple (Serapis) inspired by the Egyptian city of Canopus. The Great and Small Baths: for the well-being of the imperial court. The Imperial Palace and the Golden Square. • UNESCO World Heritage: After centuries of abandonment and looting, it has been officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999.
