   The View: From the water, Atrani appears as a compact "nativity scene" (presepe) of pastel houses. It is the smallest town in Italy by surface area, and its verticality is most impressive from a boat. "As we glide past Atrani, look up toward the clouds—that’s Ravello. While Atrani was the historic residence of the Amalfi Republic’s aristocracy, Ravello was their hilltop retreat."
