   Leaving the Uffizi you cross Florence's civic stage: the Loggia dei Lanzi with Cellini's Perseus, the copy of the David outside Palazzo Vecchio marking where the original once stood, and the Neptune fountain. Your guide explains why the Republic put these particular statues here.

   Church and Museum of Orsanmichele

   A grain market turned church, and the best open-air sculpture gallery in Florence. The exterior niches were commissioned by the city's guilds, each competing to outdo the others - Donatello, Ghiberti and Verrocchio all worked here. Viewed from the street as we walk.

   Piazza Del Duomo

   We pass the cathedral square on the way to the Accademia. Your guide sets Brunelleschi's dome in context - how a self-taught goldsmith solved a problem the city had left unanswered for over a century - alongside Giotto's bell tower and the Baptistery doors. Exterior views only; no entry to the Duomo complex.

   Galleria dell'Accademia

   Priority entry again. You start with the Prigioni, Michelangelo's unfinished Slaves still half-trapped in the marble, before reaching the David itself.
