   Climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of those things you have to feel to believe. Halfway up the 251 worn marble steps, you'll notice yourself drifting towards one wall, then the other, as the spiral stair follows the tilt that has puzzled engineers since the 1170s. At the top, the bell terrace opens onto Pisa's terracotta rooftops, the white marble of the Cathedral and Baptistery below, and on clear days the Pisan hills on the horizon. You'll stand among the tower's seven bells, each tuned to a different note.

   Visit the Romanesque Cathedral, with its striped marble walls, Giovanni Pisano's pulpit and the apse mosaic. Pisa Cathedral begun in 1063 and one of the great Romanesque churches of Italy, inside, look for the marble pulpit carved by Giovanni Pisano, the golden apse mosaic and the bronze lamp linked to the story of Galileo's pendulum.
