Flags wave, groups sing, and the atmosphere is warm and celebratory rather than solemn. The Audience is free and open to all, though a ticket secures you a place in the seated area closer to the front. Doors open in the early morning and the square fills quickly, so arriving well ahead of the start rewards you with the best vantage points. In the colder months or heavy rain, the gathering moves indoors to the Paul VI Audience Hall alongside the Basilica.
