How do I choose between experiences in Assisi?

Decide first whether you want the Basilica and saints' story told in depth or a broader orientation of the town. Private walking tours suit travellers who want questions answered and a flexible pace, small-group walks cost less and cover the highlights, and the Ape Calessino tour is ideal if hills and stairs are a concern.

Do I need a guided tour to see the Basilica of Saint Francis?

You can enter the Basilica on your own, but a guided visit adds context to the frescoes and the life of St. Francis that signage alone does not convey. Several walking tours include the Basilica alongside other monuments, while dedicated private tours focus on it in detail. Choose according to how much time you want to spend inside.

About Assisi

Assisi rewards slow exploration: a hill town of pale stone lanes, Franciscan pilgrimage sites and Umbrian countryside opening up below every viewpoint. Guided walks bring the story to life, from the Private Tour: Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi - Medieval Masterpiece to the Assisi: Walking Tour of Three Saints Carlo, Francis & Clare, while an Ape Calessino ride covers the steep climbs with ease.

Frequently asked questions

Assisi draws pilgrims and visitors year-round, but spring and early autumn are busiest, and the most popular guided walks and Basilica tours can fill up. Book a few days ahead in high season, and earlier still if you want a specific time slot or a private guide. Outside peak periods, a day or two of notice is usually enough.
