When is the best time to book activities in Matera?

Book ahead for spring and autumn, when demand for Sassi walking tours is highest and some departures sell out. Summer evenings are popular for night tours of the cave houses and rock churches, so reserve those early too. In quieter winter months you can often decide closer to the day, and free cancellation makes early booking low-risk either way.

How do I choose between free cancellation experiences in Matera?

Start with duration and depth: two-hour walking tours cover the Sassi highlights, while three-hour tours add rock churches and more cave-house detail. Then decide between a small private guide and a shared group, and between daytime and evening departures. Check the rating and review count, and confirm free cancellation is included before booking.

About Matera

Matera rewards travellers who stay flexible: plans shift, weather turns, and the light over the Sassi changes by the hour. Booking a free cancellation experience lets you lock in a guided walk through the cave houses and rock churches without losing the freedom to adapt. Two strong options are the Matera: Guided Tour of the Ancient Underground City & Cave Houses, a deep dive into the city beneath the city, and the Matera by Night: Cave House and Rock Church, which shows the Sassi in their most atmospheric light.
