St. Peter's Basilica is a functional and primary place of worship in the Vatican. The Vatican may close it without notifying their official tourist agencies if there are last-minute guests or special ceremonies. In the event that the basilica is inaccessible, the guide will tell you about Basilica from the outside and will advise you on the best way to visit on your own.
The Dome of St. Peter’s Basilica is not included in the tour but if you decide to visit it on your own you can do that after the tour. It is open usually from 7.30am to 5.00pm, tickets on site will be €10 per person.

The tour was eye opening, our tour guide Tania was so knowledgeable that you would have thought she lived back in the time of these great archeological finds. The Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica were our favorite. The stories of these two famous sites have so much history that it is hard to imagine how it was possible to build.

Tania was great - usually guides might ask the group what they are interested in before the tour whereas she picked out things as we went along, which was fine, but there were some areas I would have liked to see or look at in more detail but we were whisked along at pace. I appreciate it is exceptionally busy - I have never seen so many tourists in my life and I live in London! - but parts did feel rushed.

I had a tour today with Kate, I CANNOT stress this enough, she was BY FAR, absolutely BY FAR, the best tour guide I’ve ever had. I’ve been to Italy 3 years in a row now and are taking tours everytime, this was my 3rd time at the Vatican and she’s by far not just for the Vatican but the best tour guide I’ve ever had. Knowing what we were looking at made it so much more special than if we would have seen it on our own. Highlights were the map gallery and of course the Sistine Chapel. We enjoyed the Vatican Museums, St. Perer’s Basilica, and the Sistine Chapel. Our guide Antonella was very knowledgeable and engaging. She moved us through the museum quickly while still allowing time for questions and photos. Our group had 11 people and she made sure to keep everyone together. I would absolutely recommend this tour and would honestly love to do it again because there is so much to see, it’s impossible to see it all in one visit.

This would have to be one of the most informative tours I have been on (and I've been on a lot). For three hours Kate, our guide, informed, educated, shepherded and answered us, all while keeping a smile on her face and being warm and friendly to all. Her ability to recite historical facts and link them to the present is a real skill and I hope others get to enjoy her as a tour guide as much as we did.
